Dear Prairie Lane Families,
Welcome to all! We hope that you had a fun filled summer and are ready for an exiting school year. We think you will be excited the minute you walk through Prairie Lane’s doors and see the new addition, library, computer lab, and remodeled classrooms. Equally exciting is the addition of our new principal, Mr. David Newman, and many new staff members. Please help us make them and our new students and their families feel welcome.
Your new PTA Board has been busy planning for an exciting year at Prairie Lane. Attached is a packet of information that highlights various activities sponsored and maintained by the PTA. Please take a few minutes to decide how you can contribute. Included is a volunteer sign up form, please mark what interests you and return it to school with your child ASAP. No matter what your gifts are…No matter how much (or how little) time you have available… there is a place for you here!!!
Also included, is a school directory form. Please fill it out regardless of whether you wish to be included in the directory or not and return it by Friday, September 14th. A school directory will be provided to each family included in the directory.

ACTIVITY DAY FOOD COORDINATOR
This FUN day takes place in May and is a favorite among the students and parents at Prairie Lane. The gym teacher plans this day, however; the PTA provides lunch for the students, teachers, and volunteers. Parents may offer to help prepare and/or help serve the lunch.

BLUE AND GOLD DAY (POPCORN DAY)
The 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month are school colors day. Students can show their school spirit by wearing our school colors, blue and gold. PTA sells popcorn (.25) during lunchtime on these days. We are in need of volunteers to pop (9:00 – 11:00) and sell popcorn (11:15-1:00).

BOOK FAIR
Two scholastic book sales will be held during teacher conferences (October and April). Students and parents have an opportunity to purchase books kids will love, at great prices. Books can be purchased for home and/or to donate to the classrooms. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, sell books, and pack-up.

CHAT & CHEW
Chat & Chew is a program put on by the School District that covers many interesting topics such as Stranger Danger, Parenting 101, Basic Math Facts and Fun Science. A meal is served before the program. Come and discuss topics that affect your family. Child- care for non-school age children is available during the program. The “chewing” starts at 6:00 pm and the “chatting” at 6:30 pm. PTA sponsors this Thursday night event and is in need of volunteers to help with the set-up/clean-up of the meal and adults to help with child-care. Chairperson chooses 2-4 programs /dates for the year, arranges meals to be delivered on night of program and coordinates child- care if needed.

CLASSROOM BASKETS
Themed baskets are put together by each classroom and are auctioned off at the Spring Dance. The chairperson coordinates collection of donated items from each class and assembles the baskets.

FAMILY FUN NIGHTS
About once a month, the PTA will try to do a family night at Culver’s, Action Territory, or elsewhere. Need chairperson to organize the event and distribute flyers to students.

5TH GRADE GRADUATION
This is a wonderful way to wish our graduating 5th grade class all the best as they move on to middle school. We are in need of parents to decorate the cafeteria and help serve cake, punch, & coffee after the graduation ceremony. Parents of K-4th grade students are needed.

CELEBRATE FAMILY DAY
This event takes place in November. Students are encouraged to invite special family members to spend some time in their school. The Third Grade Teaching Team organizes this event with the PTA providing volunteers for decorations, refreshments, etc.

HALLOWEEN PARTY
The kids love to dress up for Halloween and come to school for the evening. We need volunteers for entertainment, games and refreshments. Chairperson needs to
coordinate volunteers, plan the party, and
send out flyers promoting the party.

HEALTH ASSISTANTS
Parents are needed to help with vision screenings, hearing tests, head checks, and Kindergarten Assessments. If interested, please indicate on PTA volunteer sign-up form.
HISTORIAN
This person works with the yearbook committee. The historian takes pictures to document various activities throughout the year. They then create a standard scrapbook or digital scrapbook.

MARKET DAY
A monthly order for food products. It offers quality products, and the school earns at least 10% profit from every product purchased. Order forms are sent home with the children each month and are to be returned to school by a specific date. You can also use the Market Day website to order. Two weeks later orders can be picked up at the school. Pick-up days are once a month on a Monday. Volunteers are needed from 3:45 – 5:00 pm in the gym to help unload and box orders.

MEMBERSHIP
This person would work on the recruitment of PTA members, distributing membership cards, maintaining membership information, and work in conjunction with the Treasurer to send membership forms and fees to the State and National PTA’s.

PARLIMENTARIAN
This person should have knowledge of Roberts Rule of Order. Parliamentarian would attend monthly PTA meetings and advise the President, officers, committees and members on parliamentary procedure in order to conduct productive and efficient meetings. Also helps PTA understand and develop bylaws if needed.

PHONE DIRECTORY
All Prairie Lane families have the opportunity to have their name listed in the school phone directory. The request form will come out in September. Only those families who want their information included will receive a directory. Volunteers are needed to help compile, proofread and distribute the directory.

REFLECTIONS CREATIVE ARTS
PROGRAM / ART FAIR
Prairie Lane PTA participates in the National PTA Creative Arts Program called Reflections. Students can submit works of original art in four categories, including visual arts, literature, music, and photography. Artwork is eligible for judging at the state and national levels. Information on the subject material will be distributed to the students in the fall. Volunteers are needed to help distribute information, mat and display work.

ROOM PARENT COORDINATOR
The PTA organizes the room parents for each class. Room parents are responsible for overseeing the planning of the (4) classroom parties or other activities that the teacher may need help with. They will also help with Teacher Appreciation Week, the teacher’s birthday, and auction baskets for the spring dance. Interested parents should indicate their desire on the PTA volunteer sign-up form and they will be invited to Room Parent Tea, which will be held on September 21st at school. Additional details about room parent duties will be discussed at that time.

S.P.A.R.C. BOOK BAGS
S.P.A.R.C. (School, Parent, and Reading Connection) is a reading program for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. We have about 200 backpacks that students can chose from. Each backpack is filled with books and materials about one topic. About once a month, each student will pick out a backpack that he/she finds interesting. They can keep the backpack at home for about a week. Volunteers are needed to check-in the bags and do inventory. In addition, volunteers are needed to help the students check-out the backpacks.

SPRING DANCE PARTY
This event takes place in the Spring. This is a themed dance party (Sock Hop, Western, St. Patrick’s Day, etc.) for Prairie Lane students and their families. It is part of our Spring Fundraiser, which includes an auction and various raffles. Volunteers are needed to help run crafts and activities, decorate, and serve food that night.

TALENT SHOW
The PTA sponsors a talent show in the spring. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students of Prairie Lane to perform on a stage. We need a chairperson to organize the performance and volunteers to help with costumes, scenery, and practices.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
During this week various activities are going on to celebrate our great faculty at Prairie Lane. Each day, the students are asked to bring in a specific little “thank you” for their teacher. (flower, note, lotion, candy, etc.) The week is topped off with a luncheon buffet. Need volunteers to help set-up and clean-up luncheon as well as prepare salads and desserts.

TEACHER CONFERENCE LUNCHEONS
The PTA provides lunch to the faculty and staff on the two days, during conferences, that Prairie Lane dismisses the students at 12:00. This occurs in November and April for the 1st and 3rd quarter conferences. Need volunteers to help set-up and clean-up luncheon as well as get and/or prepare food.
